Defense was the key to victory in the USA Junior Open team’s
victory over North American neighbor and rival, Canada, 16-15. Both
teams struggled to get the most out of their potent offensive
weapons. USA lead for most of the game, but the Canucks caught up
at 13-all. Points were traded to 15-all, when Josh Torrel of the
USA brought the disc down safely in the end-zone (see cover photo)
to the exhausted cheers of players, fans, and even local residents,
who had taken to repeatedly chanting the name of their favorite
country.
Tuesday produced even more Junior Open excitement with the South
African team reeling in their first-ever victory. The South
Africans defeated Switzerland, 15-9, in a match played with intense
defense – and spirit. Finland beat Sweden in another continental
rivalry match, and Germany beat Russia and Great Britain with sure
throws and solid offence.
