Down 0-3 against home team Finland in last night’s women’s
division feature game in Paavo Nurmi stadium, Japan showed a hint
of vulnerability for the first time this tournament. The Japanese
also showed poise and endurance as they regrouped and brought the
score to 5-3 in their favor. Trading points through half, Captain
Hiroko Abe (#5) hit Ayuko Ishizuka (#3) to push Japan’s lead to
13-10. Finland countered with impossible grabs by Henna Jalovaara
(#11) and consistent play by Milla Mantere
(#18).
Finland came back from a 14-11 deficit to 15-13, inciting cheers
of “Suomi, Suomi” by the near-capacity crowd. Japan closed the game
with the final two points, leaving them in sole possession of first
place in pool B. In other Women’s action, Canada remained atop
their pool, and is the only other undefeated Women’s team. Germany
won a nail-biter over Denmark, and Finland was likely worn down
from their hard-fought win over Australia. USA remains in second
place in pool A (behind Canada), having defeated Great Britain,
17-12. Game to watch tomorrow include firstround matches, Canada
vs. Great Britain, and Japan vs. Australia.
