USA junior open

Profile
Team USA’s roster is filled with 20 of the
best high school and 1st-year college players from around the
country. With more than 500 college and high school teams to
draw from, the United States’ squad has the depth and ability to
overpower the rest of the juniors field. Coaches Tiina Booth
(Amherst Regional HS) and Mike Baccarini (Paideia HS) are looking
to bring home the gold medal for the first time since 1998.
Booth and Baccarini both run elite high school
programs on the East coast of the US. Potential players for the
team were subjected to a grueling set of tryouts, which included
more than 13 total hours of drills, playing, and timed runs. They
always expect their players to be in top shape, and will drill for
Worlds with a final training camp only a few days before arriving
in Turku.
The US did not participate in the 2002 World
Juniors Championships, and is subsequently ranked 6th overall
for the WUGC 2004. Although not the clear favorite, Team USA
has medaled in every other World Juniors Championship in the past
decade, and is arguably stronger and more prepared than ever.
USA on Defense
Look for these players when the
opponent has the disc:
Ayron Jones (# 25), Respected for his
precision throwing ability, you can also expect to see him
repeatedly putting his body on the line on defense.
Tommy Hendrickson (# 5) A fundamentally
solid player on both sides of the disc, Hendrickson will make smart
plays and force turnovers.
USA on Offense
Look for these players when USA has
the disc:
Jacob Goldstein (# 10) A handler for
perennial UPA College Championship contender, Carleton College, you
will see Goldstein around the disc more than anyone else.
Expect Will Neff (# 7) and Goldstein to combine for a
majority of assists and scoring attempts.
Eldon Creer (# 31) is the USA’s big
deep threat. Darden Pitts’ hops and layouts will get
to any throws that go astray.
