Sweden women

Profile

Sweden won Gold in 1996, one of the first times a country other than USA took home the World Championship They defeated USA, then a Lady Godiva team, and proved to the world that the women’s division was an open competition. Subsequent Worlds has seen the USA defeated on several occasions.

But 1996 was a long time ago and since many women have left Swedish Ultimate to focus on families and children. There has been a generation change since that time and the new Swedish team represents little of the 1996 Gold winners. The core of this team has only been together for 8 years or so, somewhat less than many of the top competitors here.

The team has held four invitation-only tryouts scouring all of Sweden for the best women to play. As a result, this team has only played together for four tournaments before Worlds. What was at one time an exploding scene for players has diminished from 20 teams to about 10 or so, and even this is being cannibalized by the growth of the Mixed teams.

Recently the Swedes finished 3rd at the four-team Nations Cup held in Sweden one month before Worlds. They narrowly lost 15-13 to Great Britain and fell to Finland by 6, but they did manage to defeat Germany twice rather easily. The Swedes finished 5th in Heilbronn and dropped from a second seed to finish fourth at EUC 2003.

Players to Look Out For

Captain Carolina “Carro” Persson is known as the best player in Sweden. A tall blonde handler, she is the strength of this team.
