South Africa junior open
Profile
The South African junior team comes mostly from
disadvantaged areas outside Cape Town. These guys started playing
with us when we set up a development program about 7 years ago.
They are now between 17 and 19 and have been playing since they
were 10 or 11 years old. They have some amazing disc skills but
have not had any international experience (in fact none of them
have been on an airplane before!). They will learn a lot from
playing, but with their disc skills, athleticism and attitude, they
will trouble other teams. To fill out the team there are 5 Tyros
from Estonia and the UK.
South Africa on Defense
The main South African defense is man-on-man marking,
but if there is any wind we will use one of a few different
zones.
The people to watch out for on defense
are:
Asanda Nanise #12 - small, fast with
amazing skills, you might as well watch him on O as well.
Asanda Ntshanga #00 - fast and
aggressive, likes to poach and then pounce
Eric #28 - a very persistent
marker, he wont let you get away
South Africa on Offense
We use two main offences, the vertical stack
with 3 handlers and a horizontal stack.
The people to watch out for on offense are:
Derreck #99 - just turned 17,
beautiful, precise throws and reliable catching. He will always be
at the back. Style merchant of note.
Thabane #11 - great throws, cuts and
hands, he could be anywhere on the field
Sandisiwe #07 - very fast, with
good height and hands - watch for him in the endzone
Tournament history
This is the first time that South Africa is
sending a junior team to Worlds and we are ecstatic to have this
investment in the future of our game. We are going to play hard and
have a good time. Listen out for the sounds of singing and
vuvuzelas!!!
