Italy women
Profile
The women’s team in Italy is currently
stronger than the men’s thanks to a tight familiarity between the
few female players who play at the highest levels. With few women’s
teams to choose from in a country that is just beginning to embrace
Mixed play (thus potentially taking more players from the women’s
division), it is somewhat of a surprise that the Italian women have
shown strength internationally.
Their success can be traced to team leaders
Emmanuela Argili, known as “Epa” or “Manu” and Totta. Tall, slender
and remarkably athletic, Epa (Italian shorthand for “Napoleon”) has
been able to almost single-handily win games for the Italians with
her defensive blocks, endzone grabs and forehand hucks. She is one
of the most exciting players in the world as an impact player on
both sides of the disc.
Epa’s charge led Italy to a fair showing at
EUC and her presence will get the team wins in Turku. However, no
one person can dominate a weeklong tournament like Worlds and
besides her, Barbara (Babi), Totta and a few others, this team may
suffer from a lack of depth.
