Profile
Team Finland is comprised of members of four
club teams from Helsinki and the nearby city of Espoo, which is
known as the Finnish ultimate mecca. Team Finland has enjoyed
steady success in recent years. They finished third at the 2000
World Championships in Heilbronn, Germany, and won the 2003
European Championships in Fontenay-le-Comte, France.
The core of the team is the same as in the
successful EUC2003. Playing on their home turf, Finland has been
able to put together a very strong and experienced team.
Finland on Offense
Team Finland has a selection of vertical and
horizontal offensive sets, which are designed to complement the
skilled and versatile team.
Look for these players when Finland has the
disc:
Laura Salmikivi #5 Known for her
beautiful and precise throws, Laura is one of the most skilled
handlers of the team. Has lots of admirers both on and off
field.
Miisa Niemi #7 A true fighter, Miisa
gets fired up when the going gets tough. Never gives up.
Henna Tanskanen #16 A young player with
a remarkable peace of mind, Henna never makes a hasty decision with
the disc.
Sara Wickström #4 One of the captains
of the team, Sara keeps the team spirit up with her nimble layout
catches and endless energy.
Reija Ylönen#13 Also known as
the captain of the seasoned beach team Maitotytöt, Reija’s speed
and skill keep the offense flowing.
Hanna Hokkanen #77 One of the rookies
of the team, Hanna aka Hosu is a fast midfield player with an
admirable work ethic.
Jenni Oksanen #6 Agile and fast, Jenni
always gets open when the team needs her. Has stunning break-mark
throws.
Milla Mantere #18 You start believing
humans can fly looking at Milla's huge layout catches and blocks.
Makes ultimate look easy and effortless.
Kaisa Rämö #43 Fast and tireless, Kaisa
is an experienced receiver who practically never drops the
disc.
Finland on Defense
Team Finland has a strong man-to-man defense,
and also likes to throw in a zone or clam to shut off the
opponent’s set plays.
Look for these players when the opponent has
the disc:
Maija Vanttaja #17 A vexing defender:
you can be sure Maija always breathes down her mark’s neck A
handler with iron nerves and superb condition.
Pauliina Kääntee #10 One of the fastest
players on the team, PK is an intensive player who is seldom beaten
in the air.
Katja Kosonen #30 A veteran player who
often outsmarts the opponents’ offense. Quick to lay out to block
any less than perfect throw.
Minsu Rauramo #23 Thanks to her long
arms, Minsu is one of the hand block specialists of the team.
Henna Jalovaara #11 Tall, fast, and
smart, Henna often reaches out for a block even if the receiver
seems to be open.
Nanna Karessuo #21 Speed and endurance
combined in an athletic frame, Nanna is often seen sprinting for
floating garbage.
Fiina Hiitola #14 A young player with a
long track record of international ultimate, the light-footed Fiina
gets a lot of foot blocks.
Hanna Pesola #3 One of the rookies on
the team, Hanna has amazing reaction speed and often outruns her
opponents on D.
Paula Jussila #2 The tallest player of
the team, Paula's presence on the field is nerve-racking to the
opposing team. Also known as "Bunny", Paula is strong player on the
mark and in the air.
Pirjo Hästbacka #8 Despite her
minuscule frame, the perpetual motion machine Pirjo gets a lot of
blocks using her speed and experience.
